LOCAL SPORTS: PA Riders hot in tennis and swimming

PORT ANGELES  — There is no doubt about it Brian Gundersen’s Roughrider tennis team and Sally Cole’s swimming team is getting a lot of love from the media and their fan clubs because they deserve it with their dominating play on the court and in the water.

In tennis, the Roughriders just got by class 3A Bainbridge 4-3 to go 9-0 on the season. The Roughriders won all 3 singles matches. In doubles action the Roughriders won just 1of 4. The Singles winners were Reef Gelder 6-2, 7-5; Nathan Basden 6-2, 7-5; and Reid Schmidt 6-3 6-1. In doubles action, Luke Flodstrom and Tate Allen were the heroes winning 1-6, 6-1 and 6-0.  The Roughriders hit the road for the 3rd straight day taking on North Kitsap at 4 pm. Sequim will travel to Kingston with the first serve at 4 pm.

The Roughrider swim team again dominated their opponent, this time it was Sequim 136 – 41. The first relay team of the year qualified for state in the 500 free style. Harper McGuire, Danika Asgeirsson, Yau Fu and Mackenzie DuBois will swim at the state meet in Federal Way. Dubois will have to take a tent and sleeping bag and camp out at the Federal Way Aquatic center as she has now qualified for 4 single events and one team relay event. Roughrider swimmers taking first place in events were: Brook St Luise with 2 first place finishes as did DuBois. Lynzee Reid, McGuire, Sara Wilson and Rachel Cooper also finished first in their events. Yau Fu and Harper McGuire will be featured on the Roughrider VIP Halftime Show of the Roughrider Homecoming football game this Friday night.

A big night in volleyball tonight. Port Angeles, Sequim and Kingston are all tied for 2nd place in the Olympic league with 5-2 records. Kingston plays at Port Angeles at 6:45 pm. Kingston beat the Roughriders 3-1 earlier in the season. Sequim will be big favorites at home against North Mason first serve at 7 pm.

In soccer, the Roughriders host Kingston at 6:45 pm and Sequim hosts North Mason at 7pm.

In NWAC soccer action, the #1 ranked Pirate men’s team beat Skagit Valley 1-0, Shu Kato had the winning Pirate goal and the #1 ranked Pirate Women beat Skagit 3-0. Sydney Soskis, Mya Raunig and Kenzie Banner had the 3 goals for the Pirates.
