PORT ANGELES – A Port Angeles man is still in jail following a standoff with law enforcement Friday night.
72-year-old Charles V. Smith was arrested after the hours-long incident Friday evening at Monroe Road and Highway 101,
It stated when a woman called 911 reporting Smith had pointed a firearm at her face after physically assaulting her at their shared residence.
The woman fled the house into protection of awaiting Clallam County Sheriff’s deputies waiting outside.
Meanwhile, Sheriff’s Deputies attempted to verbally engage Smith who remained in the house and armed himself with two guns.
Crisis negotiators from the Port Angeles Police Department and Clallam County Sheriff’s Office contacted the suspect by phone multiple times trying to de-escalate the situation.
The Washington State Patrol (WSP) Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT)team was called in. Negotiations continued for several hours and eventually pepper gas was deployed. Smith eventually surrendered without further incident.
