YAKIMA — It was right there for the taking. The score tied 30-30 with 8 minutes left in the game with a trip to the Class 2A final four, the semifinals there for the taking for the Sequim Wolves and White River Hornets girls, and then it went to overtime.
For three quarters the Hornets played exactly how the Wolves wanted them to play to run them out of Yakima County. The Hornets had 21 turnovers and were a dismal 13 of 29 from the free throw line for 44%. The problem was the Wolves had 21 turnovers and shot an even colder 8 of 27 from the free throw line for 29% and in the end White River cashed their ticket to tonight’s semifinal match up against a heavily favored Burlington-Edison team as the Hornets found enough energy in OT, outscoring the Wolves 9-2 for the 44-37 win. Jolene Vaara led the Wolves with 14 points. Hannah Bates played hard as always and had 9 points. Taryn Johnson and Jelissa Julmist added 5 apiece.
The Wolves are still in the running to bring home some hardware. The Wolves play this afternoon at 2 pm against 20-6 Tumwater who beat Enumclaw in the regional 36-29 but lost yesterday to Burlington-Edison. If the Wolves win, they will play the winner of the WF West – Othello game Saturday morning for a 4th and 6th place trophy.
This is a winnable game for the Wolves just as the White River game was. If the Wolves play against Tumwater like they did Enumclaw in district the Wolves will be playing on Saturday. Today’s game will be broadcast on KONP Newsradio with the Les Schwab Tires pre-game show starting at 1:45 pm. Tipoff is set for 2 pm.
