PORT ANGELES – This year, the Port Angeles Police Department has selected Officer Kyle Buchanan as their Officer of the Year.
In the department’s annual report released Thursday, we learned that Officer Buchanan started with PAPD as an Explorer. He completed the Reserve Law Enforcement Academy in 2020 and served as a Code Enforcement Officer before being hired as a full time Police Officer in May of 2021.
Officer Buchanan completed the Basic Law Enforcement Academy that same year, and followed that up by getting through his field training in February of 2022, which qualified him for solo patrol.
In his first year, Officer Buchanan impressed everyone on his patrol squad when he responded to 2,270 calls for service, more than any other Officer in the Department. He wrote 365 reports, again, more than any other officer. He also made the most arrests for new charges last year, and wrote the most tickets.
Beyond the numbers, Buchanan’s Sergeant has received numerous notices of appreciation for the work that he’s done in his community, including an incident where he and other officers safely arrested a man threatening them with an axe.
