MOUNT VERNON — In NWAC basketball action last night, the 4th-ranked Peninsula Pirate women, (5-0; 12-2) had no problem with Skagit Valley (1-4; 8-11). Peninsula beat the Cardinals 64-40.
It was a total team effort as 10 Pirates scored. Former Sequim Wolf Jelissa Julmist owned the paint at both ends of the floor. Julmist hit for 14 points, pulled down 7 rebounds and had 3 steals. Lexie Mackey, the 5’11” freshman from Melbourne Australia, was just as effective. She hit for 10 points, hauling down 9 rebounds, and had 4 steals with 2 assists. Talia Marini came off the bench to score 9 points. Former Sequim Wolf Hannah Bates, not wanting her best friend and former Wolf teammate Jelissa Julmist to have all the fun, came off the bench to hit for 7 points, pulled down 4 boards and had 2 assists. Ciera Agasiva hit for 7 points and pulled down 3 rebounds. Lainey Suaava and Shania Moanunu each scored 6 points.

Lexie Mackey, the 5’11” freshman from Melbourne Australia, is averaging 9 points per game for the Pirates as well as being the official spider remover at her Peninsula College dorm.

The Pirate men faced the #1 ranked Cardinals who average 94 points a game. The Pirates for the first 15 minutes of the game played a great defensive game and trailed by 2-6 points in the first half, holding the Cardinals to just 27 points. But the Cardinals turned it on the 2nd half scoring 53 points for the 90-55 win.
Ese Onakpoma led the Pirates with 21 points. Javon Ervin added 19 points. The Pirates 3-2 10-9 tip off at 4 pm Saturday at Everett.

Former stand out high school fast pitch pitchers, Lainy Vig of Sequim and Teagen Clark of Port Angeles are now pitching for Skagit Valley College and joined Oly Archibald at halftime of last night’s men’s basketball game

In high school basketball action tonight, the Port Angeles Roughrider girls travel to Bainbridge taking on a tough Spartan team. Tipoff is at 7:00 and you can hear the game right here on KONP Newsradio.
The Roughrider boys will try to stay with Bremerton in the league standings fighting for 2nd place. They will tip off at home tonight at 7:00 against a solid Bainbridge team.

In boys swimming action, the Roughriders out swam Kingston 100-76. Colby Ellefson of Sequim, who swims for the Roughriders because Sequim does not have enough athletes to field a team, broke two Sequim swimming records in the 200 Individual Medley and the 100 Breaststroke.
Other first place finishers were Nolan Medgin in the 50 Free style, Edward Gillespie in the 100 Butterfly, Finn Thompson in the 100 Free style and Colby Ellefson in the 100 Backstroke. In the 200 Medley Relay it was Finn Thompson, Nolan Medgin, Thomas Jones and Colby Ellefson. In the 200 Free Style it was Edward Gillespie, Jack Root, Isaac Meek and Killian Waknitz. In the 400 Free Style it was Thomas Jones, Nolan Medgin, Colby Ellefson and Finn Thompson.
