LOCAL SPORTS: PA drops opening game in district tourney, Sequim boys win

PORT ANGELES — In high school district basketball action, It was a cold night of shooting for the Port Angeles Roughriders as they suffered a tough 1st round loss to a very good, red hot shooting Sammamish Red Hawk team.

One stat told the story: The Roughriders hit three 3-point shots while the Red Hawks hit ten 3-point shots as the Red Hawks advanced to the regional with a 65-57 win.

The Roughriders handled the ball well and were in the game trailing by 4-8 points until the last minute of the game when time ran out. The Red Hawks had 4 players score 12-14 points. Red Hawk sophomore Rankin “The Show” Showki hit for 13 points and was outstanding getting the ball to wide open Red Hawk sharp shooters.

Isaiah Shamp led the way for the Roughriders with 20 points.

The Roughriders will play at home Thursday night against last night’s Highline-Steilacoom winner.

The Sequim Wolves beat Evergreen 73-61 and were led by the 21 points of Keenan Green. Solomon Sheppard hit for 16 points, Mason Rapolje hit for 12 points and Charlie Grider had 11 points.

The Wolves travel to #6 seed Franklin Pierce Tomorrow night with the tip off at 6 pm. Franklin Pierce was blown out by Renton 78-47. You can hear the game live on KONP Newsradio with the Les Schwab Tires pre-game show starting at 5:45.

Tonight, the girls take over and the #2 seed Roughriders 15-6 will be big home favorites over the #7 seed Foster Bulldogs 15-6 who finished in 2nd place in the King Co League. The Bulldogs lost at home to Olympic 52-48 earlier in the season.

A Roughrider win will send them to the Regionals and a Semi Final game Friday night against the winner of the #6 seed Kingston-#3 seed Sammamish game. That game will be broadcast on KONP Newsradio.

The #4 Sequim Wolves (12-5) open up at home tonight against #5 seed always tough Enumclaw. Tipoff is at 6:00. The Hornets (14-7) finished 2nd in the SPSL behind #1 seed state power White River. White River beat Enumclaw twice by 20 points.

The Wolves have struggled with injuries and a lack of confidence of late, so the Wolves staff brought in Holly Thorton Wright to give a team-building talk.

The winner of the game will qualify for the Regionals and play in a Semifinal game at Silas high school, Friday night at 6:00 against the winner of the #1 seed White River – #8 seed North Kitsap game.

Tonight’s game will be broadcast live on KONP Newsradio and the stream at myclallamcounty.com. The Les Schwab Tires pre-game show starts at 5:45.  Oly Archibald, Greg Thomas and Joe Gladfelter will have the play by play.
