PORT ANGELES — If you are a Peninsula Pirates men’s basketball fan and a fan of the State power Neah Bay Red Devils basketball teams it was a great weekend.
Saturday at Shoreline College, the Pirate men had lost 5 of their last 6 games and had to beat the Dolphins to cash their ticket to the NWAC tournament in Pasco. The Pirates got the job done with a well-played 83-70 win over the Dolphins. The Pirates led at the half 43-35 and then outscored the Dolphins 40-35 in the 2nd half.
Pirate Sophomore guard Javon Ervin had the hot hand with 27 points. Ese Onakpoma was outstanding, hitting for 26 points while pulling down 4 rebounds, dishing out 3 assists and blocking 3 shots. Wyatt Dunning was solid with 8 points and 6 rebounds and DeShawn Rushmeyer had his best game of his Pirate career hitting for 11 points and coming up with 4 steals.
Now the Pirates will travel to Pasco where they will meet the #1 seed from the Southern Conference, the 23-4 Portland Panthers. The Panthers have the #1 offense in the NWAC averaging 96 points per game. However, the Panthers are not a big team they have no one over 6’6″. The Pirates have played well against smaller teams.
Tip off will be Wednesday at 2:00 from Columbia Basin College and you can hear all the action right here on KONP Newsradio.
