UNDATED — It was a wild and exciting weekend for local high school athletes as they competed in district events and state tournament play.
In Vancouver, a great season ended for the Port Angeles Roughriders baseball team as they lost a 7-4 lead and the game 8-7 to the #7 ranked WF West Bearcats. Unfortunately for the Roughriders, the Bearcats played exactly how the Roughriders needed them to play to pull off a minor upset, but the Roughriders made too many mistakes themselves.
Junior Jordan Shumway had a big game, hitting two singles plus a walk and a run scored. Senior Ezra Townsend had a first inning double with an RBI. Junior Nathan Basden had a single, a walk, and scored two runs. Junior Luke Flodstrom had a walk and a run scored. Bryce Deleon had a walk and a run scored. Colton Romero had a two-RBI double and scored a run.
It was a tough loss for a team who loved playing together and whose fans loved watching them. Zac More and his team were media-friendly and shined in the media attention, always willing to do post-game interviews. The Roughriders end their season with a 19-7 record. Seniors Aiden Swenson, Ezra Townsend, Kaleb Mullen, Colton Romero, and Brian Guttormsen all played their last games for the Roughriders.
It’s a quick layoff, however, since several of the Roughriders will play American Legion ball with the Wilder team starting June 1st and ending July 27th with the Legion State Tournament being played at Civic Field.

If you are a huge track and field fan, you flocked to Pugh Stadium at North Mason High School and saw some great stories being written. First, there was Roughrider sophomore Teanna Clark, the former talented Roughrider softball player who took up track for the first time ever. All Clark did was blow out the competition by chucking the javelin 125’06” to win the District Championship. Clark’s incredible story just proves what an outstanding athlete can do with great coaching.

The other great story came down to two incredible freshman athletes who track fans will enjoy watching for three more years. Clare Turella of Sequim and her friendly freshman competitor from Foss put on a show in the high jump. There were six girls left at the 4’10” mark, with all six qualifying for State. After jumping 5’0″, it was down to Turella and her buddy from Foss. In the end, Turella jumped a personal best of 5’3″ to win the District title.

The Roughriders fast pitch team placed 3rd at the District tournament, losing to North Kitsap in the semifinals. The Vikings have beaten the Roughriders in 5 of the last 7 games they have played. The Roughriders will play Super Bowl MVP QB producer Shadle Park High School of Spokane on Friday at 11 a.m. If the Roughriders get by Shadle Park, they will have a super tough game against the winner of the 5th ranked Superpower WF West-Lynden winner. The Roughriders are also on the bottom side of the bracket with #1 ranked 22-1 Sedro Woolley, who has scored over 20 runs in 7 games.
