SILVERDALE — It was a busy Thursday for high school sports, beginning at the Olympic High School pool, where the Roughrider swim team had a strong showing at the Olympic League Jamboree.
The Roughrider 200 freestyle relay team of Danika Asgeirsson, Amayah Nelson, Brooke St. Luise, and Lizzy Shaw took first place, finishing just 1.6 seconds shy of a state qualifying time. The team is favored to return to state.
Roughriders who placed in the top nine of their events, which featured 51 swimmers, were:
- 50 Freestyle: Sally Kasten, 6th place
- 50 Butterfly: Amayah Nelson, 5th place
- 50 Backstroke: Danika Asgeirsson, 2nd place
- 50 Backstroke: Lynzee Reid, 5th place
- 50 Backstroke: Lucy Townsend, 9th place
- 50 Breaststroke: Lizzy Shaw, 4th place; Brooke St. Luise, 5th place; Chloe Kay Sanders, 8th place; Mia Frances, 9th place

In tennis, the Roughriders shocked state powerhouse Bainbridge with a 7-0 sweep. In singles action, Tate Allen, Sky Gelder, and Garrett Buerer won their matches. In doubles, Luke Flodstrom and Nathan Basden swept, while Austin Worthington and Keatyn Hoch won two of three. Carter Gunderson and Grant Butterworth swept 2-0, and Zach Neff and Carston Siebel took two of three.

In soccer, the Roughriders dominated North Mason 8-1. Pyper Alton assisted Teanna Clark for the first goal just 41 seconds in. From the 24th to the 39th minute, the Roughriders netted five more goals. Alton assisted Clark again for a 2-0 lead before Kedryn DeScala scored a hat trick, assisted by Clark and Mariah Traband. Sophia Ritchie closed the half with another goal, assisted by Traband. Ava Anne Sheahan opened the second half with a goal in the 45th minute, and Brooke Pierce ended the scoring for an 8-1 final.
In other soccer action, the Sequim Wolves lost a heartbreaker at Kingston, 4-2, in an overtime shootout. Wolves goalie Kalli Grove made several tough saves to push the match to overtime. Raimey Brewer and Kylie Winter scored for Sequim in the shootout.

In volleyball, Sequim swept Kingston 3-0, while North Mason defeated Port Angeles 3-1.

The Peninsula Pirates soccer teams have a Northern Conference doubleheader at Edmonds on Saturday. The Pirate women will kick off at noon.

In high school football tonight, Port Angeles plays at Forks with a 7:00 p.m. kickoff. The Sequim Wolves, coming off a 36-25 win over Forks, will host a powerful Franklin Pierce team that demolished Sammamish 68-6. The Cardinals feature standout running back Bryson Allen, who rushed for 198 yards and four touchdowns on just 10 carries, and fullback Simon Irving, a 6’1”, 234 lb senior.

The Wolves will counter with quarterbacks Zeke Schmadeke, a 5’11”, 175 lb junior, and Kaden Miller, a 6’1”, 180 lb freshman. Running back Liam Wiker, a 5’9”, 205 lb junior, will be key to their game plan.
Tonight’s game will be broadcast live on KONP Newsradio 1450 AM and streamed at myclallamcounty.com. The Firehouse Grill pregame show starts at 5:30 p.m., featuring the Ian Henley Show and the Wolves Locker Room Show with captains Brayden White and Simon Scribner. The Enemy Coaches Show will feature Franklin Pierce head coach Trevor Hanson. At halftime, the Wolves VIP Show will include an interview with state high jump champion Clare Turella.
