PORT ANGELES — In high school bowling action, the Sequim Wolves delivered their best scores of the season, knocking down 689 and 684 pins during the team games to beat Port Angeles 5-2.

Roughrider Zoey Van Gordon worked hard to keep Port Angeles competitive, recording a 202. “Zoey was in control of her two games today, only leaving two open frames in game one. It was impressive,” said Head Coach Becky Gunderson. Van Gordon posted a two-game season-high of 337.

Victoria Nava and Skyler Krzyworz led the Wolves with two-game totals of 305 and 301, respectively. For the Roughriders, sophomore Xoey Penn rolled a 280, Brooklyn McKnight scored a 272, and freshman Lucy Townsend added a 270.

On Thursday, Port Angeles will host North Mason, while Sequim will travel to Klahowya.

In Olympic League basketball action tonight, the Port Angeles Roughriders girls (0-2 in league play) host North Kitsap (5-1) at home. The Vikings average 49 points per game, compared to the Roughriders’ 34. However, North Kitsap’s schedule includes several weaker opponents—four of their six opponents have a combined win-loss record of 0-18, with an overall opponent record of 7-25. North Kitsap narrowly defeated Olympic 49-47.

The Roughriders are desperate for their first league win before the holiday break.

Freshmen Story Schmidt, Sariah Doherty and Madison Smith have stepped up from Steven’s and played well for the Roughriders. Schmidt and Smith start for the JV team and Sariah Doherty has been a offensive force for the Roughrider varsity team

Meanwhile, Sequim (1-3) should have a good chance to pick up their second win, hosting Olympic (0-4) at 7:00 p.m.

The Sequim Wolves boys (5-0) hit the road to face Olympic (5-1). Last Thursday, Port Angeles exposed the Trojans as pretenders, blowing them out 75-40. Sequim is expected to dominate similarly tonight. Tip-off is at 7:00 p.m.

The Port Angeles boys (2-2) face a critical game on the road against North Kitsap (2-3). The Roughriders average 72 points per game while allowing just 57. In contrast, the Vikings score only 56 points per game but give up 72, including a crushing 91-22 loss to Bremerton.

Senior point guard Gus Halberg leads Port Angeles in scoring at 22 points per game. Surprisingly, the 6-foot Halberg also leads the team in rebounding with 8 per game, showcasing the results of his rigorous offseason workouts. For North Kitsap, 6-foot-3 junior forward Jaxon Kursak is a scoring threat, tallying 31 points in a 74-70 win over Foss.

Five players from last year’s rosters are now playing college basketball. For North Kitsap: Cade Orness (Gonzaga), Harry Davies (Central Washington), and Trey Carter (Peninsula). For Port Angeles: Parker Nickerson (Skagit Valley) and Isaiah Shamp (Peninsula).

Tonight’s game will be broadcast live on KONP Newsradio. The Les Schwab Tires Pre-Game Show begins at 6:45 p.m., with tip-off at 7:00 p.m. Oly Archibald and Joe Gladfelter will provide the play-by-play.
