LOCAL SPORTS: Roughriders Dominate at Shoreline, Wolves Impress at Shelton as Postseason Heats Up

PORT ANGELES  — Port Angeles High School’s Track and Field team wrapped up the regular season in style at the prestigious Shoreline Invitational over the weekend, delivering a string of standout performances against top competition from across the state.

Brody Pierce continued his stellar season in the Triple Jump, earning first place with a personal-best leap of 44 feet, 6 inches — a mark that now ranks him fifth in the 2A state standings. Teanna Clark was just as dominant in the Javelin, taking first place with a throw of 126 feet, 3 inches, which places her at the top of the 2A state rankings.

Distance runner Leia Larson added to the Roughriders’ highlights with a commanding win in the varsity 3200 meters, finishing in a personal-best 11 minutes and 43 seconds. That time ranks her first in the West Central District 3. In the hurdles, Faerin Tait placed 10th in the 100 meters with a time of 16.57 seconds, while Brooke Pierce cleared 4 feet, 6 inches in the High Jump to finish eighth.

The Girls 4×400 relay team — made up of Brooke Pierce, Leia Larson, Faerin Tait, and Storey Schmidt — turned in one of their best efforts of the season, finishing fifth in a deep field. Their time of 4 minutes and 13.55 seconds currently leads the West Central District.

With the regular season now in the books, the Riders shift their focus to the Olympic League Championships this Thursday and Saturday, carrying strong momentum into the postseason.

Teanna Clark placed 1st in the Javelin at the Shoreline Invitational, while Caleigh Alward picked up another tennis win against Kingston.

Sequim High School athletes also turned in strong performances at the Shelton Invite. Clare Turella placed third in the High Jump at 5 feet even, and the girls 4×200 relay team — Bridget Pyeatt, Dawn Hulstedt, Kylie Peters, and Ruby Horgan — finished fourth. Hulstedt also ran well individually, placing eighth in the 800 meters and sixth in the mile. Adrian Osborne added a 14th-place finish in the 400 meters, while Sean Southard came in 15th in the Javelin.

In girls tennis, Port Angeles defeated Kingston 3-1 in recent action. Emma Murray picked up a straight-sets win in singles, 6-4, 6-2, while Caleigh Alward led 6-4, 3-3 when her match concluded. Pyper Alton delivered a shutout performance, blanking her opponent 6-0, 6-0. In doubles play, the pairs of Audrey Rudd with Allyssum Larson and Hannah Hairell with Allison Fricker both posted convincing wins, dropping just four games between them. The team now prepares for league championships this weekend.

Looking ahead to tonight’s action, Port Angeles hosts Olympic in boys soccer at 6:45. In fastpitch softball, Sequim travels to Olympic and Port Angeles visits North Kitsap. First pitch for both games is at 4:15.

Sequim pitcher Devyn Dearinger, speaking on the KONP Newsradio postgame show after a 15-9 win over Forks, now looks ahead to two big games against Bremerton on Tuesday and Wednesday.
