PORT ANGELES — As usual, a few eyebrows were raised when the District 3 girls soccer tournament bracket was released last night.

The Sequim Wolves, 6-9, are the #9 seed and will travel to face #8 seed Franklin Pierce, also 6-9, for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff Saturday. There’s no question this is a team the Wolves can beat if they play up to their potential.

The Cardinals opened the season with a 3-2 loss to Bremerton but feature some strong offensive weapons. Senior Kayla Tarver leads Franklin Pierce with 11 goals and two assists, while sophomore Alivia Pena Arteaga has added nine goals and three assists.

The Roughriders will look to shut down Washington freshman standout Bella Phipps, who has 13 goals and seven assists on the year.

The game will be broadcast here on KONP Newsradio, with the pregame show starting at 12:45. Oly Archibald and Robert Grove will have the play-by-play.

The Port Angeles Roughriders, 13-3, are the #5 seed and will host #12 seed Washington, 6-10, Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The Roughriders will be heavy favorites, but the Patriots feature one of the top freshmen in the district, Bella Phipps, who has scored 13 goals with seven assists. Senior Kyler Menza has also chipped in nine goals and three assists.

The Wolves will have to contain Franklin Pierce senior striker Kyler Menza, who has scored nine goals for the Cardinals this season.

A Port Angeles win would send them to face #4 seed North Kitsap on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. That game will also be broadcast on KONP Newsradio.

Port Angeles head coach Dan Horton, shown on the KONP Newsradio postgame show, has guided his Roughriders to a 13-3 record and the #5 seed in the District 3 tournament.

In NWAC action, both Peninsula College soccer teams clinched conference championships with wins over Bellevue.
The Pirate men edged the Bulldogs 1-0, with Jeremy Obah scoring the game-winning goal off a pass from Edwin Diaz.
The Peninsula women rolled to a 4-0 victory, getting goals from Isis Bryant, Cailey Ridgeway, Elise Maffeo, and Kasi Baker.

High school football tonight has the Port Angeles Roughriders, 2-6, traveling to face league champion Olympic at 6:30 p.m.
The Sequim Wolves, 3-5, host the 6-2 North Mason Bulldogs in a game you’ll hear right here on KONP Newsradio. The Wolves Locker Room pregame show starts at 6:05, featuring senior linebackers Samuel Shinkle and Aron Golbeck, followed by the Ian Henley Show. Oly Archibald and Greg Thomas will have the call.
