PORT ANGELES — Police are investigating gunfire reported early this morning on one of the Eighth Street bridges. That incident has led to an arrest.

Deputy Police Chief Jason Viada told Newsradio KONP that officers were called around 3 a.m. after reports of a man firing a gun on the bridge over Valley Street. When the first patrol unit arrived, they briefly confronted the suspect.

Viada says that while no shots were exchanged during that initial encounter, the person of interest, 44-year-old Jesse Raymond Crain, fled the scene on foot into the wooded area near the bridge. He was later arrested.

“That investigation is ongoing. And, as we are able to, we continue to add charges at the jail for him. And at this point, we’ve added three counts of unlawful possession of a firearm and one count of aggravated assault of a police officer. But, what I can say right now is that I have no reason whatsoever to believe that there’s any additional danger to the public stemming from this incident at this time.”

Officers recovered several .45-caliber shell casings on the bridge.
