PORT ANGELES — Basketball fans have a chance to catch what should be an entertaining girls high school matchup this afternoon as Port Angeles, 2–2 on the season, hosts 2B power Onalaska, which comes in at 3–3. Tipoff is set for 1:30.

The Loggers, members of the rugged 2B Southwest District, have played a demanding early schedule and feature one of the top 2B athletes in the state in 5-foot-8 junior shooting guard Emalie Jacoby. Jacoby is averaging 18 points and six steals per game and was a second-team all-state volleyball selection this fall.

Among her admirers is Tenino’s Dave Montgomery, the public address announcer for Washington Huskies men’s basketball and the Southwest District tournament. Montgomery says Jacoby is the most athletic and coordinated player on the floor and that the Loggers go as she goes.

Onalaska recently faced state power Lynden Christian, trailing by six at halftime before falling 71–51. The Loggers’ signature win this season came against Rainier, 43–36, and they also posted a 64–40 blowout of Forks. Forks, however, edged Port Angeles 38–35 in the season opener.

The Loggers’ lineup includes 5-foot-6 senior Renzy Marshall, averaging nine points and six rebounds; 5-foot-9 sophomore Leighton Underhill at eight points per game; senior Kaiyah Sandridge with seven; sophomore Leah Hamilton and senior Randi Haight at six each; and 5-foot-7 eighth-grader Mia Olson, a highly rated prospect.

Onalaska is coached by Alana Olson, an Onalaska graduate who played at Saint Martin’s and later served as head coach at North Thurston. She is married to former Forks standout Kurt Olson, a 1,000-point scorer who played on three state tournament teams alongside Kasey Ulin.

Today’s game will be broadcast on KONP Newsradio with Oly Archibald and Dustin Clark on the call.

In flag football, Sequim defeated Klahowya 28–14, with Kiley Winter scoring three touchdowns and Ruby Moxley-Horgan adding another. Sequim then beat Port Angeles 37–6, as Winter scored three more touchdowns and quarterback Sydney Thomas threw scoring passes to Lily Sparks and Raimey Brewer.

In college basketball, former Roughrider Millie Long helped Fresno State to a 53–36 win over Wyoming. Long finished with eight points, five assists, and three rebounds as the Bulldogs improved to 7–6 on the season
