PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Roughriders girls basketball team, 17-6 on the season, has earned the #12 seed in the Sweet 16 Regional round. The Riders will face #13 seed Renton, which comes in at 21-3. The date, time and location of that regional matchup are expected to be announced later today. We’ll have a full scouting report on Renton tomorrow as Port Angeles prepares for its postseason test.

Sequim is also headed to the Sweet 16. The Wolves are the #14 seed and will take on #11 seed Nathan Hale.

Port Angeles also turned in a strong showing at the State boys swimming and diving championships. The Roughriders placed fourth overall, and head coach Sally Cole was named the 2A Coach of the Year. We’ll have a full breakdown of the results on tomorrow’s show.

At Peninsula College, the Pirates men picked up a critical 94-88 win over Olympic last Saturday to stay right in the Northern Conference playoff hunt. With Everett falling to Edmonds, the Pirates now sit at 6-7 in conference play — one game ahead of the 5-8 Trojans for the fourth and final NWAC playoff spot.

The race tightens Wednesday night. The Trojans are expected to be favored when they host Shoreline, while the Pirates face a tough challenge at home against Skagit Valley. Peninsula will be the underdog, but momentum is on the Pirates’ side.

Point guard Patrick O’Dingo, who made the long trip from Perth, Australia to play for Peninsula, led the Pirates against Olympic with 29 points and seven rebounds — and his play suggests he’s not ready for the season to end anytime soon.

Pirates sophomore Patrick O’Dingo, shown here on a KONP Newsradio postgame show, scored 29 points against Olympic.

Sam Tekeste, the hero of Peninsula’s last-second win over Everett, added 17 points. Titus Driver chipped in 14, while former Port Angeles Roughrider Gus Halberg finished with 13.

On the women’s side, Peninsula continues to roll. The Pirates improved to 14-0 in Northern Conference play and 21-4 overall with a 75-56 win over Olympic.

Former Neah Bay Red Devil Ryana Moss led the way with 18 points. Kimberlee Brown added 14, Makena Patrick scored 13, and Alecsis Smith posted a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds.

Former Neah Bay Red Devil Ryana Moss scored 18 points against Olympic and will play her final home game Wednesday night against second-place Skagit Valley.

The Pirates will host Skagit Valley on Sophomore Night Wednesday, with the men tipping off at 5:00 and the women at 7:00.

Both games will be broadcast live on KONP Newsradio.
