PORT ANGELES — In a game broadcast on KONP Newsradio, the Sequim Wolves baseball team went on the road and pulled off an emotional 9-8 win over Bremerton to keep their district tournament hopes alive.

With the score tied 8-8 in the top of the sixth inning, Devyn Dearinger singled in Hunter Tennell from second base for what turned out to be the winning run.

Sophomore pitcher Conner Oase, who relieved starting pitcher Devyn Dearinger, had to face the top of the Knights’ lineup in the seventh inning. With two outs and runners on first and second, the ice-cool Oase watched center fielder Kaden Miller make his third catch of the inning to end the game.

Other big hits came in the third inning, when freshman third baseman Van Johnson singled, and junior right fielder William Kupers doubled, driving in four runs to give the Wolves an 8-6 lead. Kaden Miller also had a double in the inning.

The Wolves finish the regular season 5-9, tied with Bremerton and North Mason.

Former Roughrider and current Olympic College Ranger Jordan Shumway provided color commentary for the KONP Newsradio broadcast of Sequim at Bremerton.

With Port Angeles beating Kingston, the Buccaneers drop to last place at 4-10 and now have an RPI of 43. Sequim moves ahead of Kingston with an RPI of 40.

The Wolves should get into the district tournament, likely ahead of Kingston and possibly Bremerton and North Mason.

The Roughriders’ win over Kingston secures a solid fourth-place finish in the Olympic League. Port Angeles has now won five straight and is expected to earn the number six seed in the district tournament. That’s the same seed the Riders had last year when they upset Tumwater and went on to finish eighth at state.

The Roughriders finished fourth in the Olympic League with a 7-7 record and have now won five in a row. Head coach Wyatt Hall and his staff did an outstanding job with a team that lacked the varsity experience of the past three seasons.

In boys soccer, the fifth-ranked, 14-2 Roughriders shut out Bremerton 5-0. Matthew Miller scored three goals, while Kanyon Anderson added two. Freshman goalkeeper Maverick Williams recorded his sixth shutout of the season.

The Roughriders will host a district match Tuesday night at Peninsula College at 6:00, and will play again next Thursday. That game will be broadcast on KONP Newsradio and could be a semifinal matchup at third-ranked Fife.
