PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles School District is moving toward staff cuts as it works to close a nearly $2 million budget gap.
District leaders project a $1.9 million shortfall for the 2026–27 school year, driven by declining enrollment and rising costs.
A resolution before the school board would authorize a “Reduction in Force,” or RIF, allowing layoffs and staffing changes to balance the budget.
Proposed cuts include one teaching position, one maintenance job, and seven paraeducator positions. Additional reductions have already been made through attrition, with more than eight certificated staff and five paraeducators leaving through retirements, resignations, or transfers.
If approved, the plan directs the superintendent to finalize a balanced budget and notify affected employees.
District officials say they’ve been communicating with staff and the community as the process moves forward.
The school board is expected to vote on the resolution tonight.
