LOCAL SPORTS: District Play Brings Highs and Lows for Roughriders and Wolves

sportsgraphic

FIFE — The Port Angeles Roughriders baseball team blew a 3-1 lead to the Fife Trojans, falling 4-3.

What makes the loss especially painful is that the Trojans gave the Roughriders several opportunities to take complete control of the game, but Port Angeles committed too many errors and left too many runners on base.

Fife scored two runs in the fifth inning to tie the game at 3-3, then capitalized on more Roughrider errors in the sixth to score the winning run.

Port Angeles still had a chance to pull out the win in the top of the seventh when the Roughriders loaded the bases with nobody out. But a strikeout and a double play ended the game.

Bryce DeLeon, Ethan Swenson, and Owen Leitz scored the Roughrider runs.

Pitcher Brady Martin turned in a solid outing, going five innings and allowing just four hits.

The Sequim Wolves were no match for the defending state champion Bainbridge Spartans. Bainbridge beat Sequim 11-0 in five innings.

This Friday, both the Wolves and Roughriders will play at Fife High School.

At 4:00, Sequim, now 8-13, will face 14-7 Orting.

At 6:00, Port Angeles, 12-9, will take on 15-7 Steilacoom.

Both games will be broadcast on KONP Newsradio.

The Port Angeles Roughrider boys soccer team beat North Kitsap for the third time this season, winning 2-0 behind two goals from Matthew Miller. Freshman goalkeeper Maverick Williams recorded his seventh shutout of the season.

The Roughriders, now 15-2, will travel to face 15-1-1 Fife Thursday night at 6:00 in a district semifinal matchup.

The winner advances to the district championship game Saturday at 3:00 at Bainbridge. The loser will face a winner-to-state, loser-out match Saturday at 1:00 at North Kitsap High School.

Thursday night’s match will be broadcast on KONP Newsradio, with the pregame show starting at 5:30.

At the district golf tournament, Roughrider Sky Gelder shot a 74, good enough for second place and a spot in the state tournament.

Noah Meyers also had a solid tournament, shooting an 83 to finish in 10th place.
