SEQUIM – As we reported Monday, Port Angeles School Superintendent Marty Brewer has proposed a solution to making up snow days and days lost to a strike by adding three extra days to the final week of school in June and requesting a waiver of two days. Out of an abundance of caution, that proposal will not be submitted until later this month to be sure we don’t get any more days of heavy snow.
Meanwhile in Sequim, Superintendent Gary Neal has issued a letter describing where his district is in the process.
He’s invited the presidents of each of the district’s six bargaining groups to discuss the issue, pointing out that the required 1027 hours of student instruction will not be met without adding school days, though he doesn’t say how many.
He says the district is sending out a staff and parent survey this week to help with their decision-making process on how best to meet the hourly requirement.
The letter adds that there is no easy answer in determining how to make up instructional time and asks that folks “realize that there will be a burden somewhere with the outcome”.
