Port Angeles – Clallam County’s health officer says the county is doing much better than most of the rest of Washington state when it comes to COVID-19.

Dr. Allison Berry Unthank told a weekly briefing Friday, that although there has been a slight uptick in the number of cases over the past week, Clallam County is doing better than 90 percent of the rest of the state. She noted a high number of testing here, coupled with a positive rate remaining below two percent. There are currently 13 active cases in Clallam County. The case rate is now at 30 per 100,000 population for the past two weeks.

Unthank says most of the latest cases locally are due to people travelling, so the level of community spread has been minimal.

As for a vaccine, Unthank expects Clallam County could get some vaccine as soon as December. It will be a limited number and go mostly to health care workers, first responders and perhaps some high-risk individuals.

She urged people to keep up their social distancing, wear masks and get tested especially if you are feeling sick to keep Clallam County from seeing the same wave of cases increasing across the country.
