PORT ANGELES – Changes are coming to some vaccination events scheduled in Clallam County.

The state of Washington has paused administering Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines while the FDA investigates six, rare blood-clot issues with women who received the vaccine.

Clallam County had planned a J & J clinic in Port Angeles this weekend. Now Health Officer Dr. Allison Berry says they will move forward with the clinic but will convert to Moderna shots.

In an interview last week with KONP, Berry said people can opt for a single dose of the Moderna vaccination and get the same efficacy of the single shot Johnson and Johnson.

“And so we have heard people talk about that they want to wait until we have Johnson and Johnson in the community, because they just don’t want to get two shots. And I would say, I don’t recommend that, but we are getting Johnson & Johnson on the 18th. We’re going to have about a thousand doses in Port Angeles. So if you really want one of those, you could do that. But if you aren’t really committed to only having a single dose, you can also just get one dose of Moderna and it’s similarly effective. Not that I technically recommend that, but it’s an option if you really want to just get one shot.”

Berry is still recommending people get the second shot to get the full efficacy. Berry notes the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines have not had any issues with clotting or other significant adverse reactions.

The Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe has cancelled two Johnson and Johnson clinics scheduled for next week and have no other events planned except to dispense second doses.
