PORT ANGELES   — State transportation officials have released a plan to replace the Highway 101 bridge over the Elwha River.

WSDOT’s environmental assessment for the project is now open for public comment. Spokesperson Tina Werner says they are hosting an online “open house” through August 18th.

“We recognize how much of a vital link it is for people as a major east-west Highway going between Port Angeles and Fork. So and we would really just encourage anyone who lives and works in the area, maybe they’re a frequent traveler of US 101, and have them learn about this document and get their feedback.”

In the document, WSDOT chose the “build alternative” option. It involves the relocation and construction of the bridge near the current structure.

The Environmental Planning Lead for the project Victoria Brook says they looked at various possibilities in replacing the bridge and route to the county’s west end.

“That are many different Alternatives. You know, where different locations to put the bridge, potentially rerouting and upgrading Highway 112 and 113 as an alternate route, you know. We  look at all these alternatives and landed with with the bridge replacement in the current location.”

The project would realign 101 at the turnoff for Olympic Hot Springs Road to correct the current curve as well. WSDOT would build a new bridge just north of the existing bridge. The existing bridge would remain open to traffic during construction.

The project is expected to cost $35 million dollars. Construction could begin next year.
