The Sequim Wolves girls team and the Port Angeles Roughriders boys team open regional basketball play tonight in Mount Vernon. The #13 seed Sequim girls (19-5) take on the #12 seed Lynden Lions 15-6 with a 6 pm tip off. The Lions are a young team with just one senior. The Lions average 54 points per game and give up 42 points per game. The Wolves average 54 points per game and give up just 39 points per game. The Wolves are led by 5’10” Sophomore Jolene Vaara who averages13 points per game and 8 rebounds per game. Vaara is the sister to 6’9″ senior John Vaara of the Port Angeles Roughriders. The Wolves will need a big game from junior point guard Hannah Bates who averages 10 points per game to go with 4 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists per game. Senior Hannah Wagner is the Wolves outside shooting specialist. Wagner is averaging 8 points per game and 6 rebounds per game. The winner of this game will play Wednesday at 12:15 in Yakima, the loser is done for the season.

The #7 seed Port Angeles Roughriders (17-5) will take on the #2 seed Lynden Lions (19-2). The Lions know their way around Yakima well. They have made the state tournament 12 years in a row as a Class AA school. In those 12 years, they have brought home a trophy 11 times including 4 state championships. The Lions average 68 points per game while giving up 48 points per game. The Roughriders average 67 points per game and give up 49 points per game. The Roughriders have 4 players that average double figures. Leading the way is senior Wyatt Dunning at 25 points per game. Senior John Vaara at 18 points per game, Senior Xander Maestas 13 points per game and Quanah Wheeler 9 points per game. The winner of this game will play Thursday in Yakima at 9 pm. The loser will play Wednesday at 5:30 pm. Oly Archibald, in his 40th season behind the mic, has the live play by play and Greg Thomas will provide color commentary.

Saturday, the #6 seed Port Angeles Roughrider girls (16-4) travel to Battle Ground to take on the #3 seed Hudson’s Bay Eagles (17-3) with a Noon tip off. The Roughriders are led by senior Eve Burke 21 points per game. Shooting guard Junior Anna petty 9 points per game and Senior point guard and Lower Columbia College signed Bailee Larson 8 points per game. The winner will play Thursday at 12:15 while the loser will play Wednesday at 9 am.

Also Saturday in NWAC action, the Peninsula Pirates will host Edmonds in a double header with the women tipping off at 5 pm and the men 20 minutes after the women’s game.
