SEQUIM – The nation is facing a trade skills shortage. Experts say the lack of trade skill exposure at a young age in recent decades in schools and at home is adding to the issue.

The Sequim Maker’s Market is back all summer, and part of the market is an effort from a couple of retired tradesman to bring exposure to the trades for local children.

Every Saturday between April 23rd and September 24th, Bill Feely and Chuck Fink will conduct workshops at the market at 3rd and Washington geared for the exposure to the trade skills.

What we’re trying to do is try to reach out to kids that will come to these classes. They’re like from 10 to 2 on a Saturday and that they will learn 20 or 30 different applications that they’ll never learn if they weren’t exposed.” said Fink.

Things like using a tape measure, simple home repairs and even some electrical skills.

Fink says the workshops are open to ages eight and up, but even adults who want to learn some tool skills are welcome to take part.
