LACEY — There was plenty of excitement in Lacey over the weekend for the Port Angeles and Sequim girls fast pitch teams. Both teams accomplished their main goal of qualifying for the State Tournament starting this Friday in Selah. Sequim embarrassed Sammamish 21 – 1 in 3 innings and Port Angeles with Teagan Clark pitching another gem beat White River River 8-2. Both teams lost their chance of playing in the championship game with Sequim losing to upstart #7 seed Fife 6-3. Fife shocked everyone by winning the district championship game over Olympic who beat Port Angeles in the other semifinal game 6-4.

Port Angeles and Sequim then took their Highway 101 rivalry to I-5 for the district’s 3rd and 4th place game. With the Roughriders deciding to give Teagan Clark a breather at the start of the game, the Wolves pounced on the young Roughrider pitching and lead 9-3 after the top of the 3rd inning. The Roughriders then brought Clark into pitch and the Wolves would score only one more run the rest of the way. The Wolves still led 10-8 going into the bottom of the 6th when a young Roughrider left Fielder Sent shock waves around the Olympic Peninsula. Heralded freshman Heidi Leitz hit a grand slam over the right center field fence and the Roughriders had their 15-10 win over Sequim. Sequim was discouraged with the loss, but elated they would play this weekend in Selah.

The #15 seed Wolves will open the state tournament Friday morning at 10 am against #2 seed long time state power WF West of Chehalis. The Bearcats know their way around Selah well and have won several state championships. In the bracket above the Wolves, sits the #10 seed Cedarcrest vs #7 seed Olympic game.

The Roughriders drew the dreaded #8 seed vs #9 seed game against Ridgefield. That means the winner of that game will most likely play #1 seed Othello who plays #16 seed West Valley of Spokane. First pitch of the Port Angeles game is at Noon. Both Sequim and Port Angeles games will be broadcast live on KONP radio.
