CLALLAM COUNTY – The Port of Port Angeles will not be selling John Wayne Marina to any private developer, and there will not be a tax levy to support the marina on this November’s ballot. That’s the takeaway from Thursday morning’s meeting between Port staff, Commissioners and consultants, who presented their evaluation of questionnaires distributed to county residents.

Port Commissioner Connie Beauvais told KONP that while the Port is not likely to be able to pay for future upgrades, there are several other options still on the table.

Those options could include the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe, who already have an aquaculture operation in Sequim Bay, or the formation of a metropolitan park district between the county and the City of Sequim. The commission has also heard from yacht club members about the possibility of forming a co-op with other boat owners.

The subject of putting a tax levy on the ballot died for lack of a motion, and there appeared no will among the Port staff and commissioners to sell the marina to a private developer, particularly in light of the outcry from residents.

Port Executive Director Karen Goschen says their relationship with Crossroads Consulting will continue as the Port explores whether some other entity would be better suited to owning the marina.
