Carlsborg – Clallam County PUD has come up with a proposal to create an electric vehicle charging station in downtown Sequim that would run on solar power. They’ve submitted an application to our state’s Department of Commerce to set it up at their former substation at the corner of Govan and E. Washington.

It’s actually a three-part project that would integrate a new 30-50 KW community solar generation system, two electric vehicle charging stations, and a distribution scale battery system. Each component of the project would be funded by its own innovative mechanism to minimize cost.

The electric vehicle charging stations would be funded by a joint partnership between the City of Sequim and Clallam County PUD.

The solar component would be funded as a community solar project. Rate payers could opt in to receive solar-generated electricity and would then receive a credit on their bill. Utility Services Coordinator Mattias Jarvegren explains:

The micro-grid battery component would be financed by a matching grant provided by Commerce. The battery would be tied to the site’s fiber network controls and communication hut already located on the property, as well as provide power for the car charging stations.
