OLYMPIA – Starting in July, Oregon shoppers in Washington will lose their sales tax exemption.

A bill passed by Washington lawmakers over the weekend will put an end to the very reason that a lot ofOregon residents drive across the river to shop.

There is a loophole to still allow for the exemption, but it’s not nearly as easy as showing your Oregon driver’s license or ID. Oregon residents will now need to fill out an annual application for the Washington Department of Revenue to receive a reimbursement of $25 or more in paid state sales taxes.

Proponents of the bill said the exemption was unfair and a drain on potential money for the state, and they also don’t think many Oregon residents will bother filling out the paperwork. The state anticipates the change will generate nearly $53 million in added money.
