CHIMACUM – Get ready for another round of potential long backups heading east on or off the north Olympic Peninsula.

A week after two-hour traffic backups on Hwy 101 at Discovery Bay, the state will start a similar chip sealing project on SR 104 on the route to the Hood Canal Bridge.

The work is going to be from mileposts 2 to milepost 4.5 between 101 and Center Road from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Travelers will see one-way alternating traffic controlled by flaggers. In some sections, a pilot car may be used.

The DOT says drivers can expect delays of at least 15 minutes, but it may take 90 minutes or longer to get through the work zone. Miles-long backups in both directions are anticipated.

The speed limit will be reduced to 35 mph around the clock throughout the week, so allow plenty of extra time even during the non-work hours. That’s especially important if you’re trying to catch a ferry at Kingston.
